EXCELLENT BOUTS STAGED AT WAIPUKURAU

WAIPUKUBAU, This Day. There was only a small attendanCe at the amateur * boxing *" tourname'nt held under the auspices of the "Waipukurau Boxing Club in the Municipal Theatre last night. Excellent bouts were provided, with boxers from Wellington, Taranaki and Hawke's Bay competing. The officials weife: Judges, Messrs A. W. Parsons,.C. L. Crooks and Dr. C. Raymondj, Teferees, Messrs H. M. Christie, M.P., and J. D. Ormond, Jnr.j announcer, Mr P. Bridgeman; timekeep'ers, Messrs F. A. G. Dunn and 3. A.*Swinburne. - Mr A. W. Parsons, patron ,of -the club, • presented the trophies . to. the winnejs at the end. of- each bout. Details are as under:—. F. Gibson (Waipukurau) 4st. I01b. lost to. J. Bell (Waipukurau) 5st. 41b. Both youngste're 'fought 'haTrd, but Bell, with ' his extra :weight- and'1 lo'nger reach, forced the flght to win,:although Gibson fou'ght back gamely and connected well in the final To,und? with straight lefts. O. Lum Jack (Waipukurau) 5st. 41b. beat W. Stoddart (Waipukurau) 5st. 51b. Lum Jack, being the stockier ! of ' the . two youngsters, forced- the" fight,' but Stoddart fought back gamely, defending well. and was unlucky in not making it a draw. . - , ■ F. Elmers (Waipukurau) lOst. 91b. beat B. Sharples (Otane) .lOst. 61b. The bout was very quiet, with . Elmers forcing the fight and; landing one or two lefts' arid- right crosses. • . , B. Walker '(Waipukurau) 8st. 21b. drew with' S. Hutchins (Hastings) 8st. 91b. From the start Hutchins forced' the fight, ■ usihg both glov'es) Walker guarding well' and- landin g good body blows. There was little difference between the two' boys. Downey 's longer xeach stood him in good ktead, but' Petefs ' scienee 'en'abled him- to-escape punishment. Peters connected' well -with 1 straight lefts.' ' G. Bridge (Wellington)' 9st. 41b. beat P. , Kilkolly (Dannevirke) 9st. ;.51b. There jwas a, great deal of clinching in thiB bout, which ppe.npd , "slowly. , Bridge forped ihe fight, and ;in the second.and final rounds lan,ded seyeral hard lefts. Kilkolly was. content to xemain on the defensive. Bridge won by a good margin. • . ' B. Nicol (Waipukurau) 6st. beat G. McGuire (Dannevirke) 6st. Both boys showed science, usihg their lefts - and rights. Honpurs were eyen at the end of the sefeond 'round. McGuire took the offensive in the final round with Nicol defending well and escaping most of the blows, and 'at times conuected .with both gloves to win the bout. ; J. Davey (Waipukurau) 8st. 121b. lost to Y. T. Payne (Hastings), 9st. Both boys viere evenly matched. . Davey conneeted with blows to the body, and Payne used straight lefts to the -face. There was a great deal of clinchinj|. Payne won the bout narrowly. - C. Beale (Hastings3 8st. 31b. was beaten by L. Longhurst (Wellington)' 8st. 31b. Longhurst conneeted with several' left and right swings to. the face and body in the first and second rounds. The final round was a' repetition of the first two with Longhurst defending and Beale lailding a good right to the solar plexus, but he. was unable to reduce Longhurst 's early lead. S. Smales (Waipukurau) lOst. 71b. beat A. Kitt (Hastings) lOst. 81b. Kitt proved the more aggressive in _ this bout, Smales holding him off with good lefts to the face and landing several rights. Kitt conneeted with left and right swings. Smales was content to remain on the defensive, and landing several rights to the face in the final ro and, won easily. T. Loveridge (Taranaki). 9st. 101b. beat F. Finnigan (Wellington) 9st. 21b. The^bout opened with Loveridge aggressive and trying to get inside Finnigan 's guard. Hard blows were exchanged in the final round, Finnigan landing .one or two lefts, but Loveridge forced the fight to win after a good bout. Jack Davis (Hastings) lOst. 71b. beat R. Hale (Wellington) lOst. on a knockout. Davis took the offensive from the start of the first round. Hale, guarding well, escaped many of the heavy .blows aimed at him. Davis landed a heavy right to the jaw early in the secofld round. and knocked Hale out for the count.
