WAIROA COUNTY FINANCES IN SOUND POSITION

WAIROA, Last Night. The Wairoa County Council completed its flnancial year with a credit balance of £12 16/2 in the county fund, while credit balances in all accounts totalled £13,333 5/1. This was revealed at last week'8' meeting by the ehairman, Mr. A. G. Nolan, who submitted figuros prepared by the county trcasurer, Mr. B. G. SignalL * It was shown that the credit balanee in the county fund account had increascd from £3855 3/2 from April 1, 1936. while the total credit balances of all accounts, including loan account, had increased from £289 8/11. , The Maia Items. The main items were shown as follows, together with comparative figurcs for the previous year:—
Of the credit balance of £12,383 in the county fund account, £3868 is available for renewal of bridges in the county only. In the figures shown above, the public debt of the county was reduced by £2708 during the year and by £25,181 since 1927. Receipts and Expenditure A summary of the receipts. and expenditure was given as followe, the figures in parentheses being those of the previous year: — Receipts. — General, separate and special rates current and arrears, £29,945 (£26,402); Government subsidy on general Tates, £2668 (£2402)); grant in lieu of rates, Kakariki biock, £210 (£1801; maintenance eubsidies on main highways, £11,254 (£11,842) ; Government grants, ordinary roads and bridges, £979 (£1028) ; license f ees, heavy traffie fees, dog tax, etc., £3384 (£2531); saies, materials, hire plant, etc., £963 (£134); refund intercst from other local bodies, £833 (£1004); refunds expenditure on unemployment xelief, £14,686 (£17,002). Expenditure. — Management, salaries, office expensee, etc., £2474 (£2384) ; xoad and bridge works in xidings, £8586 £9328); maintenance of main highwaya, £14,902 (£16,046); road and bridge works, land fund account, £57 (£444); road and bridge works, Government grants, £810 (£466) ; road and bridge works, bridge fund, £802 (£97); interest on loans, £66797 (£6645); hospital and charitable aid, £4713 (£3788); relief of unemplioyment, £14,129 (£16,562); payment to Wairoa Power' Board of rates collected on its behalf, £1554 (£1440). Staff Congratulated. Supplementing tYe above statement, the ehairman congratulated the staff on the expeditious manner in which the balance-eheet had been prepared. The year expired on March 31, and the statement was ready on April 2 — a very line record. The summary clearly showed the council 's position — a surplus had been reached, and he thought it well to have such a' good Teserve, or round about £10,000., to meet any possiblo disaster that might come, including a possible slump, though he was not looking for that. He recommended that the balance should be so kept as a reserve for eventualities. Several councillors congratulated tho ehairman on the fine result achieved.
