WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
HAVELOCK NORTH GROUP At the April meeting of the Havelock North Women' s Institute, Mrs Chapman-Taylor presided over a good attendance of members. Proceedings opened with the Institute Song and Aspiration. Seeing that the Institute's next meetings would fali on Coronation. Day, it was decided to hold it on May 5, at 2 p.m., and to have a short ceremony of tree-planting on the 12th. Matfers concerning the ccming Council meeting in Napier were dealt with, and Mrs Leedom and Mrs Bond appointed delegates. Wool for tho knitting competitions was distributed, also sci'ap books, to be filled up and given to the " Children' s Home in October. A show of hands on the subject of tea arrangements resulted in the decision to revert to the method in use prior . to the last six months, and Mrs Meads' offer to act as convenor was accepted. Mrs Turner-Williams, the speaker for the afternoon, gave her audience a most entertair.ing miscellauy of travel. Hill-top burying grpunds in England, gardens and ancient roads, dove-cotes and monks' cells, old village churches with their bells and curious monuments all these were delightfully described. Then, in sharp contrast, Mrs Williams told of the enormous increase in traflic everywhere, the tar-sealed country lanes, the disappearance of old landmarks and the erection of huge blocks of flats. The problem of slum clearanc© bad interested her very much and she had many thouglitful things to say regarding the ways in which it is being dealt with. This part of lier talk was particularly timely, in view of the recent inspection of slum areas in New Zealaud cities. Mrs Williams was cordially thanked for the pleasure she had given. The National Anthem closed a full and interesting afternoon.
