FOUNDRIES DISPUTE
Union Ready for Long Struggle NEGOTIATIONS FAIL SYDNEY, April 16. The negotiations for a settlsment of the foundries dispute collapsed. The: nnion leaders announced thnt they are now preparing for a prolonged Struggle. The employers of 40 Sydney foundries on MaTch 17 served notice to over 2000 employees that tholr services would not ba required until further notice. The lock-out was the result of a dispute with the employees, who ciaimed increased wages and elimination of overItime. The Metal Trades Employers' Association insisted on the observance Of the award, and issaed an ul'imr.tum xo the employees of the Clyde Engineertng Company and Gordon Marr and (Bons, where strikes had occurred, that if the men did not xeturn to'work by ifarch 16 all the metropolitau foundries would close forthwith. By the following day about 50 foundries were idle. In addition to their previons claims the men asked for a 40-hour week. Last' Monday it was Teported that the employees in more than ten foundries had resumed work that morning. Those who resumed had abandoned the stand taken in a reeent ultisnatum that the strike, would be continued until a rise of 12s a week in the basic wage was granted.
