LOCAL BODY AMALGAMATION

Our Own Correspondent)

Hon. W. E. Parry's Views

(From-

* WAIROA, Last Night. ' Th© Minister of Internal Affairs", the Hon. W. El. Pariy, paid his first official visit to Wairoa to-day, and addressed a large meeting to-night. ! Mr Parry said he was very concerned about the problem of the multiplicity of local body organisations and it was evident that as they were at present constituted they were not in keeping wilh the times. It was obvious that a number of the local organisations must go out of existence, The Minister detailed the vast changes that had taken place in the past 30 or 40 years, in transportation and communication. Science. had given big mackinery and it required a bigger and stronger organisation to use it to its full capacity. The Wairoa district " was ideal for th© scheme of amalgamation, owing to its isolation from the other districts and one local governing authority could do the - work more efficiently than the number now doing it. Mr Par'ry said that this matter of hative rating Was now receiving attention from the Government. The Mayor, Mr H. L. Harker, mentioned the need of having the Whakaki lagoon partly drained, stating it contained about 6000 aeres and there was an area of 5500 acres that was b^dly flooded in heavy weather. Mr Parry stated that he would refer tlie matter to the Minister concerned.
