USE FOR NAPIER TRAMS

Shelters at Motorists' Camp " H '■ k At 10 minutes to 11 on th6 morning of February 3, 1931, Mr F. C. Ciothier was driving one of Napier' s municipal tramcars. Together with a number of passengers, he made all haste to leavo it. when the earthquake rocked the town and district. For more than six years Mr Ciothier never entered a Napier tramcar, but a few weeks ago he was appointed caretaker to the motor Camp at Marewa. His surpriso may be well imagined when he found that hie office and headquarters were none other than the very tram he was driving on the day of the earthquake. The Borough Council has made use of all its tramcars at the new motor camp .as shelters for visiting motorists. They are ideal for this purpose, for in addition to being easily convertible into well-equipped living quarters, tliey alford excellent shelter from the rain. The car used by Mr Ciothier is neatly equipped as an office, complete with desk and telephone. Since the camp was first opened to

f_ the public three weeks ago, 388 people have stayed there. The cdok-house and men's and women's bathibg rooms (with hot water -and showers) are now completed and the fresh-water bath-. ing pool nas been in. use. The area of the camp has been prepared for the grass seed, and the caretaker has spent a lot of time tidj'ing up- the flower beds; in fact, the camp is looking extremely attractive, even though it is , still more or less in the embryo §tage.
