| DUNEDIN, Last Night. To-day was a memorable one in tk© history of Dunedin for it marked ths official opening of the new chief post office by the Postmaster-General, Hon. •F. Jones, at a ccremOny that was attended by between six and seven thousand people. The completion of tho building, which is of seven stor'eys and constitutes a dominating f eature of tho city's architecture, , represents the reward of patience since during the past twenty years the postal business 1 iu Dunedin has been condueted in ' ' temporary" premises. The building cost approximately £350,000 and is not only an imposing edifice outwaTdly, but is handsomdly furnished aud equipped iu accordanee with modern requirements. It will house, in addition to the post and tele- ' graph departments, the majority of .other Government offices in Dunedin, .which for many years past have been iscattered over the eity in a bewilder- • jing conf usion. The change-over of the various deipartments, but especially that of the •telegraph brauch, to the new quaxters was effected with astonishing efficioucy and eelerity and was greatly facilitated by the eo-operation of members of the staff as well as by the skill of technical experts. The first letter to be jJosted in the new post office was addressed by the Mayor, Eev. E. T. Cox, to H.E.H. the Duke of Gloucester, who laid the foundation stone on January 12, 1935, and the first telegram was sent by Hon. F. Jones to Et. Hon. M. J. Savage.
