An explbsiou, f oHbwed by a fire, destroyed a lbtry loaded with wood on the Hastings-Mafaekakabo road yestew : day afternoon. No details oi the occufrelice have • been received by the police, but it is understood that the lorry, whieh was proceeding to Hastings, h&d a tin bf petrol standing on the ffoor of the cab. A short-circuit from the electrical sys'tem of *the engine Caused a' spatk, which resultCd in the tin exploding, and the lofry butst into flames. EffottS made to quell the blaze were unavailing, the woodwork being burnt, and a considerable quantity of the load was consumed by the flames. The man who was driving the lorry sustaiued some burns.
