; MASTERTON, Last Night. Of interest to game sportsmen was a return given to*day by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon, W, E. Parry) of what is likeiy to be the production of pheasants for liberation through the Dominion during this year. As a result of communications made t.o various acclimatisation societies, it had been ascertained that at least 6,259 pheasants would, over a wide area of both islands, be given wing, as against 5,126 birds 'last year. Mr Parry expressed the opinion that the State's activities in the rearing of .pheasants, although commenced at the jlatter pari of . 1936, had provided an linereased number of birds for the year's Ishooting territories and the establish[ment of a game f arm had been more •than justified. In spite of many difficulties the farm had reared over 1009 birds. The Minister said that correspondcnce received by the Internal Affairs ,ahd Tourist and publicity Departments showed that New Zealapd was morethan ever attracting to its waters and fields sportsmen from Australia and from countries more distant. "It is the Government's intention to keep up — if not to make better — the standard of New Zealand's sport and facilities for .obtaiping it," added Mr Parry. "The Dominion 's reputation is a good one and it worth maintaining in all avenues of our activities."
