MUSICAL APPRECIATION
U»e oi Gramophone at School A desire to impaxt in.pupils a greater appreciation for good music prompted the he&dmaster orthe "Napier Boys' High School; "Mf "W, T. 'FostCr, to ask the Napier Secondary Education Board last evening.to apprpye of spending money on the foundation of a gramophone sound "system similar to the one at the Napier Girls "High School. ' The "board's finance commiitee ■ is to consider this request. and mahe a report at the Jiext meeting of the board. Mr Foster made the following reference1 to the matter in his monthly > report: — "It will be remembered that last year the seeretaTy 'ahd" I were emnowered to mahe certain arrangements for the reproduction of. ■ gramophone records in connection with the music classes. This expenditure was held over until the amount of 'time for music in
the curriculum could be increaaed. As the board at the end of last year decide.d that it could not accede to my request for additional tuition by the music niaster, I have taken the responsibility upon myself and am now giving instruction each week to the school in three different groups. "While it has been possible to do a certain amount with the piano only, I find it impossible to go further without the use of gramophone xecords. I have "discussed the matter with the secretary and he suggested that it might now be possible to go further than was originally intended and to lay the foundation for a sound system along similar lines to that installed at the- Girls' High SchooL"
