Opening Day oi Meeting To-morrow BRIGHT PROSPECTS

V-Eiariv uira-; AUCKLAND (This Day. For the autumn fixture of the "Whangarei .Bacing Club, to be held to-mor-row (Friday) and Saturday^ the first day's iields are encouraging, "although with last-minute defections there mny not be sufficient runners in all races to furnish three place dividends. The going. should be •excellent after the reeent showery weather. "When the "race speeial,'. 'a train chartered and paid for by the club, left Auckland for "Whangarei this morning it was well filled with horses engaged at the fiiture. The principal event to-morrow is the Mclnnes Memorial Handicap,, run. over a mile and a quarter. There are a dozen left in, but there may not be more than eight or nine starters, several claiming later engagements. It is likely that the favourite will be Te Hai, who finished fourth in the Autumn Handicap at Avondale last week affer being slow out of the barrier. This horse now ap,pear(s to be coming more solid; he won both the handicap and the sprint on the second day of the Taurange fiiture a month ago. However, he will find plenty. of others to keep him going in this .event. Kelly has JTdw "a big weight and, while he will carry it all right, he is likely to find one or two of the lighter weighted division troublesome, Eeat Gay Talkie Miss Lu defeated a good field at Tauranga and though she is now getting up in the weighte, she is genuine and can be relied upon for a solid race. Crooning has not got to her best since the spring, when she won over this distance, beating Gay Talkie narrowly, and she has only 4 lb. more to-morrow. Crooning does not always run two races alike, but there is no doubt she is well placed here. Respectful and Yalrent are prospects, and so is Gay Broney; the latter usually runs well on this course and, if started, may be the surprise element. He is also in the last race. Bonny Gay will be fancied if the traek becomes heavy,. and King Theo and Jewelled Girdle are hacks that stay a bit better than the average performer in that clates. It shoiild be a good contest, with Crooning given tlie preference. The Sprint, the Stewards' Handicap, gives Princo Acre a wonderful chanco to ma^e amend for recent defeats. He is placed well and, as the sting is out of the ground now, he will be in his element. ' Tosh, Triune and Johnry Walls are possibilities, too. Gay Eroney's Chance | If reserved for the Waipu Handicap rnile, Gay Broney will be • a difficult horse to bead off, for he is nicely placed. In his absenee Whakapara and Sergia may fight it out, although on a wet track Yera Acre may be a real danger. The two-year-old Romani reada well in the Trial Stakes and CUien A.bb would need only to repeat Avondale xunnipg to be difficult in the Portland Hack. Spearcourt rather stands out in the Hurdles unless the debutaht _ Boughal surprises. Aymon may be the* best of the moderate lot in the Settlers' Handicap; and a real problem is preseuted by the manv speedsters in the Maungatapere Hack, with horses sueh as Surella, Palustre, ProressiQnal and Okawa engaged; the lasl-namcd has been galloping brilliantly at Ellerslie and he won in .promisirig fashion at Tauranga last month. The form horses engaged to-morrOw are the. following: — - 12.10, TRIAL STAKES. — Romarii. Orefiold, Veraeious. 1.0, PORTLAND HACK.— Glen Abb, Strathire, Professional (or Te Broney). 1.45, McINNES MEMORIAL. — Crooning, Te Hai, Miss Lu. 2.30, NORTHLAND HURDLES. — Spearcourt/ High Star, Boughal. 3.10, STEWARD'S HANDICAP. - Prince Acre, Tosh, Johnny Walls. 3.50, SETTLERS ' HANDICAP--Aymon, Chief Lap, Alyth. 4.30, MAUNGATAPERE HACK. — Surella, Palustre, Okawa. 5.10, WAIPU HANDICAP. — Gay Broney, Sergia, Whakapara. Riding Engagements Riding engagements for the first day include: — W. M. Thomson. — Melicent, Master Moir, Hopalong. R. E. Thomson. — Grand Score. . N. R. McKenzie. — Miss Lu, Tosh. J. Day. — Spearcourt. J. Muir. — Boughal.
