Ujfficial Opening of , Season

WAIROA, This Day. The official opening of the basketball seascm took place on Wednesday afternobn. The afternoon was beautifully fine and the courts were in excellent condition. In the absence of the Mayor, Mr H. L. Harker, and the deputy-Mayor, Mr M. J. Gemmell, Councillor F, Berry declared the courts officially opened for the season, and said tliat plaj'ers would be pleased to see that the council had laid down a new court, and he boped that all the teams would have a successfui season. Mrs M. B. Svenson, president oi the association, briefly addressed the teams and said that they were proud to know that one of their players, Miss J. Dnwin, had been selected for possible inclusion in the New Zealand team to
risit Ausfcralia. Tliree cheers were heartily given for Miss Unwin. Mrs Svensen strepsed the necessity of all the girls having their qniforms of a uniform length, as it would greatly improve the appearances of th© teams when playing. Tlie Tanke© touniament occupied the afternoon, and some good entertaining play resulted. Tlie winning team, Rovers, proved tliemselves faster in passing and more accurate and confident in their geal-throwing. The results were: — Rovers 12 v. Redwing 2; Wanderers 2 v. United 0; Redwing 4 v. United 1; Rovers. 10 v. Wanderers 0; Rovers 13 v. United 1; Redwing 3 v. Wanderers 1. Winners : Rovers, with 35 goals ; runners-up, Redwing, with 9 goals. Tlie games were capably refereed by Misses H. Sti others,. C. Christensen and Z. Adsett. It is hoped that a trophy will bo donated to tlie association to be competed for- annually in a Yankcc tournament on opening day.
