Foolish Prank Played By Workmates COURT'S WARNING

INVERCARGILL, Last Night. A young man whose driving license had an endorsement on the baok for being drunk in ciharge.of a dar and whu had never been drunk in his life appeared before Mr. W. Hr Freeman, S.M., in the Magistrate 's Court to-day for thisi Offence. The endorsement stdted that he had xeceived pne year's imprisonment. The endorsement stated alsa that a ponaltyof £10 had been inflicted for speeding." At the bottom of the licence there wa3 an extension signed With the name of the city traffie inspeetor who disclaimed all knowledge of any such extension. This was the sequcl to defendant being stopped by Inspeetor J, G. 0. Edwards near the Wallacetown Hotel where he was said to be driving in an •fratie manner. The inspeetor thought defendant was intOxicated but later found him to be quite sober. Defendant eould give no explanation other than that "the writing might have been donp by some of his fellow mechanics for a joke during lunch hour when they usually sat in the cars outside the garage. The licence was kept in the pocket of the car. Defendant would not admit that his name, which had been on-the licenee sheet, had been signed by himself. In dismissing the ease, the Magis-j trate said that the case had been brought as a warning that people ghould not tamper with their licences.
