Swept Off Horses in Swollen River CAUGHT IN QUICKSAND

• BLENHEIM, Las't Nigkt. Two Blenheim drovers, Messrs Walter F. Ward . and Ken Ross, narrowly escaped witk tkeir, lives wken tkey were swept off tkeir korses during a fresk in tke Wairau river after tke korses kad been caugkt in the quicksand and carried to the swift deep current. For several days unavailing efforts j kad been made to get & mob of obstinate steers across the loug Wairau bridge on the Blenkeim-N elson highway. Finally it was decided to make tken ford the river. Several mounted stockmen were engaged and tke steers kad just about reached the opposite bank wken the. accident occurred. Messrs Ward and; ' Ross were botk in difficulties but after a struggle tkey reached the bank in an exkausted cohdition. Ironically tke recalcitrant cattle meantime kaving reached their objective turned round and swam back to the point of departure.
