TRACK NOTES

Yesterday morning there were many horses out on the Hastings tracks but very few given fast work, there being no\ace meeting until the end of this month. • • • Tycoon (H. Murray) was not asked to make time when taking 51sees. for the f o.ur furlongs. » When the going is easier it ie the intention of his ownertrainer to jump this half-brother to Highgrader. # # # Iddo (B. Stowe) and Parry (K. Bruenr), stable companions, were assoeiated in a spin over five furlongs to register 64J and finishing abreast. * # # Ambusian (C. Shields), half-brother, by Lord Quex, to Karl, and Lacquer (C. Shields) were only going a strong three-quarter pace when running half a mile in 55J. * # * Cotsfield (I. Briggs) over a round was given a working gallop. The Gold Soult 'chaser looks like being ready early for cross-country events and will be given a run in the hurdle races at Hastings next month. # « « Jazz Boy (H. Callinan) showed too much pace for Mohua (P. Atkins) throughout their half -mile in 51. In the spring the latter looked like making good, but she has been a big disappointment. However, members of her sex often have a lean time as three-year-olde and maybe she will do better next year. • * • The Nelson Cup candidate Pladie (H. Muprray) and Padishah (B. Stowe) were companions in a gallop once round. . The time was 1.40J, the last half-mile in 54. Pladie will be ridden on Saturday by C. Shields and the manner in which he has been working this last few weeks warrants the trip being undertaken. He left this morning in charge of H. Griffiths. ' m * • The Lapidary — Lady Hill two-year-old filly in J. Glements's stable and Tullamore Were sprinted a couple of times down the straight but were not timed. The former. as yet is inexperienced but in action appeals as one likely to know how %o "leg it" later on. • • • Mr C. Haldane, through the bloodstock agency oi Mr T. S. Eoulston, has aold Gascon Ohief, a two-year-old son of yGascony and Chief Salue. He is destined for Brisbane, wljere his new owner resides. # # Tommy Atkins, a six-year-old by Lackham — Loyal Maid, who as a two-year-old was considered very fast but during his four years on. the turf has not won a race, is now an inmate of G. W. B. Greene '$ Hastings stable. # # # Master Cyklon is having a let-up for a week, when he will again resume training to be wound up for the H.B. Jnbilee Gold Cup.
* 9 # S. J. Eeid, who recently took up his 'residence here, was on the track yesterday morning with the .two-year-old Gainscourt — Conchita filly. This is the first member oi Mr F. Ormond 's team that Eeid has brought to the track, but the whole oi his team are not yet quartered here, as "Martindale" boxes are being renovated before Mr Ormond 's string is located there. • * • . ' J. Molloy, a young apprentice from Melbourne, who has ridden nine or ten winners, is expected to arrive here this week and wili be attached to S. «T. Eeid's racing establishment. * • # * Mr A. E. Wishart, the newlyi appointed seeretary to the Hawke 's Bay Jockey Club, took up.his duties at the beginning of the week. * # * . A petition, originating from the Taranaki district, is at present. going the rounds here among ownera and trainers asking that ithe Conference! aanction the allowing of 7lbs. to apprenticee who have not ridden 20 winners. The idea in the main meets with the approval of trainers, .but the f raming of this petition could have been more to the point and more explicit, as it .does not state wh£t is going to happen with regard to .the apprentice when the 20 wius have been gained. In practicaUy every racing centre. of the Dominion there is a branch of the Qwners, Breeders and Trainers' Association and that is the body which ehould sponsor this movement and place it before a district committee to be submitted as a remit to the Conference for adoption. * # # Peter Beckford looks to have been improved by his Manawatu race and if now opposed by the same field in which i he finished second last Friday he would carry solid support from these parts. * * * , Eoyal Minstrel, who was slightly injured by a falling horea at Napier Park last March, is still subject to treatment and is yielding but slowly to same, * # # Trainer W. D. Turnbull is at present in Hastings with Big Dook and in all probability will remain here wi,th the Colossus gelding until after the Hawke 's Bay Cup meetinfi. * • # # Early in the season Mr G. D. Beatson gave Cletrac (Traetor — Lady Thurnham) a couple of races and then a letup. The chestnut is now bowling along again at Hastings and looks a very much improved gelding. # # # Kahikatoa is at present in active work in the Te Aute district, but most of his work is being done on the lead. In all probability he will make his reappearance at the Hastings races next month, * # * Nelumbo, who won at Tauherenikau last Easter Monday, is only doing light work at present. She has fined down somewhat and will never be very big or carry much condition. However, she has. plenty of speed and her defeat the first day at the Wairarapa fixture is one of the racing mysteries that crop up oceasionally and lend spiee to the game. # « # The two-year-old Etzel (Siegfried — Alimond), who went slightly amiss at the Wairarapa meeting, has been eased in his work and gelded.
Sardius, who is running out on the property of his owner, Mr W. Ian Hamilton, still carries a slightly enlarged hind joint, but it is hoped that with a spell and treatment a full recovery will be made. His half-sister by Tidftl ha*' joined up with W. D.
Young 's string and a sweet young lady she is " * # « The latest yearling to be put through his initial education at Hastings is one of Mr 0. Nelson 's, a colt by Gascony that G, W, B, Greene is handling.
First Chapter, who has been at Woodville this last month, is expected back to Hastings next week. His full ,br other. Tupai, sinee winning th«j Novice at Wairarapa has only been' pottering about, but the race and trip seem to have benefited h'm somewhat*
