BOOKMAKER FINED £10
Case in Hastings Court "IHE VERIEST TYRO" A fine of £10 was inflicted 011 Benjamin Harrison Barber, a native, when he was charged in the Hastings Magistrate ;s Court this morning with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Police evidence sfiowed that aecused was carrying on only a silverbetting business. Barber was given one montfi in wbich to pay. Detective-Sergeant L. Revell stated that, following on information raceived, witness, accoxnpanied by Constable Craigie, interviewed the accused. He explained that he had been taking small bets in thd winter for an agent, antl recently started taking bets himself. None of the bets was over 5/-. The accused had £10 in his possessi.on, which indicated he was operating in only a small way. Accused was a eeasonal worker at the freezing works. For the accused, Mr W. S. Averill said that Barber had had difficulty in getting on to sustenance and had started taking bets. "He is the veriest tyro at the game and has lost heavily," counsel explained. In pointing out the seriousneas of the offence, the Magistrate flned accused £10, with costs 10/-.
