WAIPAWA, Aprit 12. - At the monthly meeting of the Waipawa County Council to-day, Mr A. L. -p.nmha.ll complained of the charge made for repairs to Carlyon 's bride, stating that. the approach was bad and it was impossible to see oncoming traffic until it was right on the bridge. Or. Butler said the approach was definitely bad and the bridge was very narrow. In the circumstances it was decided to reduce the charge to half, the Automobiie Association to be asked to sigmpost the bridge, and the engineer to furnish a report. In response to the Prime Minister's appeal for support for the King George y National Memorial Fund, the chairman said this was a national object and one that should be supported by every citizen, irrespective of donations by local bodies. — It was decided to contribute £5 5s. Th« Hawke's Bay County Council advised that Trafflc Inspector Yates' old car had been valued by the Highways Board at £"50, and asked for an expression of opinion from the council as to its disposal. — It was decided to suggest that tenders be called for the cax, a motion by Cr. Thomson that £50 be aecepted failing to find a seconder. The Hawke's Bay County Council asked whether the Waipawa Council would agree to a bonus of five per cent. bding paid to Traffie Inspector Yates.-— The council agreed to pay its share of a bonus on the amount coutributed by the respective counties. Valuable Letter Lost. The Post -and Telegraph Departmejit advised that no trace could be found^ of a county letter forwarded to Tikokino containing £20, — Received. The Wellington Local Bodies Officers' Industrifil Union of Workers forwaxded sehedule of claims in respect to local body employees.— The chairman said the case would be handled by the exocutive of the Counties' Association. The Acting-Prime Minister Outlined arrangements for comjneniorating the Coronation, the staff to be granted * holiday on Coronation Day on full pay. — The chairman said it was going to' be difficult to arrange a ceremonial programme, which would command large numbers, owing to tlie various att.ractions elsewhere. — It was decided to decorate the county, offices with bunting and to co-operate with. the borough.as far as possible. . ; ■ . . ■ . . . Mr D. C. Marshall ..and othefs .petitioned the council to put a xoad through Wharetoka to join tip Chambers' and Craigs ' properties.— Thea chairman pointed ont that.a number .of-the signatories were not 'ratepayers in tie' Waipawa County and; ' the petition "Was, therefore, out of order. Onga Telephone Serrice. Mr F. C. Daniels, hon. secretary of the Onga branch of the yarmers' Union, gave details in support of- his compiaint concerning the inefficiency 'of the -telephone service. — Cx. Thomson considered a lot of the trouble was due to fauity plugging at the exehange. Cr. Butler - quoted an instance where the f ault was due to the 'phone. The chairman said the instruments were the propcrty of the Government and it was extremely difficult to get up-to-date 'phonOs. The county service, he said, was not perfect, but it served a very useful purpose, and if the service was discontinued half the present subsoribers would not b'e able to pay the Government charge. The linesman was. doing his best to prOVide subscribers with a satisfactory : service. ' ' Mr Daniels is to be advised that the council 's aim is to give communication .with the outside world at the least possible cost to the subscribers, and that every effort was being made to give'aa : efficient service. Drains on Private Property. Mr W. Addis drew attention- to the • need for clearing the drains on Mr • White 's property at Argyll. Cr. Butler : said the trouble "was due to the fact that drains on Mr Larsen's propferty were not kept open. The clcrk and engineer are ta investigate the legal position. ■ MeSsrs J. I. Carter ana D. M. Standige drew attention* to the damage done by ' the Onga creek overflowing and flood- > ing adjacent properties. — The council decided it had .no responsibility unless county roads were endangered.- The matter was one for a xiver board, and. any work done should be covered by a special xate. Cr. Glenny said the riyer had scoured a bad'hole on Grass road and he main- ■ tained that a short drain would obviate a recurrence of this damage and give relief to the settlers. Cr. Gray considered that if the county did anything, it would be looking for trouble. Cr. Glenny said he quite realised that the county could not spend money on the protection of private property, but his suggestion would protect the road. The cost of cutting the new drain would not be more than £25, and if the council contributed one-third of the amount the position would bo iinproved. The matter was rei'erred to the riding members and the engineer with pcwer to-act. Mr A. D, Miller asked for certain work to be done on Black's road. He had already put in two days clearing a slip. — To be paid for two days' labour. Mr N, Larsen drew attention to the spread of -blackberry, and urged that ; the matter be taken up by the council. —The chairman said notices had been issued by the Eabbit Board inspectors and it was for them to take action.
