Associated Chambers' Resolution DEM0CRATIC SAFEGUARD
(By Telegraph-
WELLINGTON, This Day. "Becognising that the freedom of the newspaper Press is one of the principal safeguards of democracy, the Associated Chamhers of Commerce of New Zealand regards with apprehension the attacks that recently have heen • made on the Press of the Dominion and urges upon the Goverament that, having regard to many declarations made in the past hy its members in favour of complete freedom of puhlic expression, it should at once disclaimi any intention of interf ering with the freedom of the Press." This resolution was carried unanimously by the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand at a meeting to-day. The matter was raised by the Auckland Chamber, which asked that the association give consideration to recent developments in the matter of the freedom of the Press. Members at the meeting commented on the fact that democraey had two safeguards: First, the judiciary, which had also been assailed in some quarters; and,. secondly, a free Presis. It was an eloquent fact that visitors from other countries found reason again and again to compliment New Zealand on the very high standard and dignity of its daily press.
