GRADING OF ROADS
Work in Dry Weather COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION "There appears to be a lot of unpleasant feeling about the roads just «iow," said Cr W. Turner at to-day 's ineeting of the Hawke's Bay County Council when Mr L. M. Pattullo wrote coniplaining of the condition of thp Wharerangi-Rissington road. "It is not much use grading the roads during the dry weather. 1 think that it is a waste of tiine and money,' continued Cr. Turner. "I don't agree with that at all," said Cr. S. M. Palmer. "From the Tukituki bridge to Havelock North the load is in better order, as it has been kept graded. We have simply got. to keep at the roads and do our best despite tho dry weather. That is 110 reason why we should sit back and do nothing. ' ' "On some of the roads grading is only a waste of time during dry weather," eaid the chairman, Mr F. B Logan. "I find that metal graded up to the centre of the road is puslied off to the sides again the next day." "I think that our graders are too light and only make potlioles," said Cr. S. Bennett. "Since they took ovor the Wairoa road the Public Works graders have done splendid work and the road is a pleasure to travel over." "On the roads on the flats grading has got to be during the dry weather to keep down corrugation," said Cr. C. C. Smith. "This work must be done periodically to keep the roads in order. ' ' *•1 am not suggesting that the graders should be taken off the roads altogether. and neglected, but I do say that ratepayers cannot expect roads fo ,be kept in such good order during dry weather," replie.d Cr. Turner.
