KOAU BEING DISCHARGED
Ten-Day Dispute Ends CARGO JETTIS0NED Following a dispute. lasting 10 days, the waterside workers at Gisborne who had. refused to work*. with the crew of tlie Napier motor vessel Koau returned to work to-day with the crew. The dispute, had arisen for /the first time over an old rule, 'which stipulates that on vessels. up to 250 tons gfoss register, the crew shall work the winches, and close the • hatches ; on board the. vessel during the loading and discharging of cargo. The Koau : is a vessel bf 144 tons gross register. The. cause of the disput© was the new award governing the watersiders, andit was stated that the new rules did away with the practice. This morning, however, the men accepted the position, and returned to work with the crew. During the period when th© Kaou, which trades to coastal ports from Napier under the house flag.of Richardson and CoM was lying idle at Gisborne, fear was felt that a quantity of iinslaked lime in the hold of the vessel might undergo spontaneous combustion. After communication with the owners, the - master of the vessel put out to sea and dumped this portion of the cargo overside. It is understood that the remainder of the cargo comprised mainly rails and other equipment for tho construction of the- East Coast" railway, arid that the delay in discharging "the cargo has had no deteriorative effects. The Koau is due to return to Napier on Tuesday, when she. will resume her xtsual' lightering and coastal work.
