THAT RANFURLY SHIELD

■ - ♦ ONE OF rrs DKAWOS JUNIOR FOOTBAUL AFFECTED. Moving th§ Adoption of the annual report of the Otago Rugby Footbali Union at the annual meeting last week, Dr. Perry, the Union's president, said that although possegsion of fhe Ranfurly Shield was in many ways an asset of copsiderable importance, it had its clrawbaeks. First let them consider the position of junior footbali. The Semor competition last year had been completed early, and the Jnnior Competitions had been curtailed on account of the representative games. Their junior footbali was important, and. their aim should be to provide healthy exercise for increasing numbers, especially now that Saturday mornings were free. Secondly, the Ranfurly Shield games forced the great majprity of senior players to stay on the bank, so that what should have been a pastime for the many beeame towards the latter half of the season a game for tbe few. Also, what was the effect on those few? Before eaeh match there was a feeling of tension that was inimjcal to the enjoyment of a game. Dr. Perry rqiterated his statement that he thought Ranfurly Shield games interj fered with the junior games, and con(cluded: "However, I think we may look back on the season 1936 as a most successful one,"— (Afu^use.)
