TESTING A RELIGION

There has always been a curious reluctance among Ohristians to subjeet their religion to any testing process, and especially to apply -to it the only test suggested by Jesus Christ, "by their fruits. " There is something harsh' and matter-of-faet about the very idea of a test whieh seems to make it inapplicable to so delicate and elusive a thing as man's spiritual lif q and experienees. But the pragmatic method, however little use* we may have for it in philosophy, does provide us in every-day life with a rough and ready cnterion of values. To ask concerniner " a man 's relieion whether and

how it works, i® perfectly legitimate and provides us with a standard of judgment that is at least fair and more reasonable than most.
