. Hastings Association

THE ANNUAL REPORT The following ie the annual report of the Hastings Basketball Association: — The Association opened the 1986 season with a record numjber -of teams and diptinet enthusiasm among the players and offioials. Teams : 35 teams toqk part in the competition} 6 A grade Saturday, 5 intermediate, and 8 junior, and 7 seniqr A "Thursday, and 9 senior B. Hastings Competitions : In the Saturday A grade. competition, Havelock were the. winners, with West Efed run-ners-up. Thip grade proved to be very clo-sely contested. In the B grade aection, Coiivent were the winners, and H.S.O.B. (1. runners-up. C. Section— Convent C. 1. were sucpessful, with Convent Conyent O. 2. runners-up. Ther© were two grades in the Thursday competition, Roachs' winning the A grad§j and Beatallp the B grade. Roachs', Thuraday champions, "later played a ma^n against Havelook winning the game and thus becoming Hastings champions for 1936. The 'Saturday B grade winners (Convent) played %e winner of the Thnrpday B grade (Beatalls), Convent winning, and theyafore becoming Hastings B grade champions. ^ * ' Tourrxament : Instead of the usual seven-a-side knock-out tournament.being held on the King's Birthday, a nihe-a-side knock-out tournament was held, and this proved lxighly successful ooth from the players and officials pojnt of view. Most of tbe games were evenly contested, the winners being: A.l Grade, H.S.O.B. ; A.2 Grade, C.O-G. ; B. Grade, Havelock; C. Grade, Convent. Representative matohes : This year a Thursday representative team travelled tq Gisborne to taho part in a tournament. Although not successful in any of- their games, the girls fhqroughly. enjoyed the trip. The B. and C. grade Saturday representatives played against Napier teams, and were sucpessful in both matohes. Hawke's Bay Bepr^esentatiye Team: This team was chosen on somewhat dxfferent lines from .those of previous years, a representative team from Hastings playing a representative team from Napier, the winning team to be the Hawke's Bay Representative team. In an evenly contested game, Hastings were the winners, and the following girls trayelled to Christchurch to take part in ihe New Zealgnd championships: G. Symes (captain), B. Butcher, (vice-captain), B. Tong, T. Eives, A. O'Meara, G. Bbbertson, H. Bligh, G. Giles, I. Joll, H. Begley, J. Harris and F." Struthers. We extend congratulatioas to these girls, and special congratulations go tp Gladys Symes and Rona Tong, who had the honour of being chosen tp represent New Zealand in a team to tour Australia. Both thesp girls have., played representative basketball for severaj years, and tboroughly deserve their success. Miss struthers also deserves congratulations for being chpsen in the North Island team. Referee'B Association : This Association has again proved to be of great benefit to basketball, and we urge all referees and intending referees to join up. Mrs V, Craven had the honour of being chosen to referee at the New Zealand tournament, and unfortunately, she was unable to attend. Finance: We commenced the season with a credit balance of £22 14/10, and when one considers the calls made on

the Association's funds during the seaspn, ijb is very gratifying .to learn that our oredit balance now stands at £37 12/11. Games Evening: A very successful games evening was held in the Drill Hall on August 7, and proved highly entertpining. The .teams assembled at Nelson street and, headed by the band, marched down Heretaunga stereet to the Drill Hall, where team races of all descriptions were held, High School being successful in winning the* trophy awarded to the team gaining the most points. There were several onlookers, and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Social : A dance was held tbis season in the Oddfelows' Hall, and proved to be very enjoyable. The various elubs contributed to the supper, and during the evening Mrs D. Hingston, the Hawke's Bay Basketball president, presented the trophies to tbie varioua winners. Insurance : Two claims were made on the insurance fund this season, and these were paid in full, leaving a credit balance of approximately £18 5/9 at the Post Ofiice SavingB Bank with which to commence the new season.
