Good Fields To-morrow at Awapuni REVIEW OF RUNNERS
(By
The Manawatu autumn meeting opens to-morrow on the Awapuni racecourse and will be cbntinued on Saturday. The Awapuni Cup under w.f.B. conditions will be decided on Friday and the Sire's Produce Stakes on Satur- ! day. The fields are of fairly even calibre, so the facing should be close and interesting. This district will be represented by a fairly strong team. Racing eommences at 12.15 with tha . EARERE HURDLES Of £175; lt mile.
Manawatu should bo #11 the better for the- racing he recently had at Feilding. A good hurdler is Beau Gall&nte, but it is essential that he should have a firm track, so he may be at a disadvantage to-morrow: in this. xespect. Hunting Queen the first day at Feilding enjoyed a very* comfortable win and now, with 10.9, will have many friends. Sporting Song, at the same meeting, won the seeond day, Hunting Queen being a non-starter. Bazaine is fast but lacks stamina, while Royal Mimic is on the improve and, with the track easy, the Gisborne geldidg may upset calculations. An outside possibility is Count Willonyx. Largest investments may be on HUNTING QUEEN; ROYAL MIMIC and SPORTING SONG, 12.55. AUTUMN PLATE Of £130; 7 furlongs. Maiclen conditions for two-yoar-olds and upwards. They are antyhing but a smart lot, recent place getters being Galtee More, Naughty Marietta, Glenthawn, Golden Enterprise and Puroto. Relative, a half-sister, by Postertity, to Commeadation, will be in demand, though she has little form offering and will be at a weight disadvantage, as
all ages carry the same impost. Ngatarawa trained Black Fox has been a very big disapointment, but of late is said to have come on in a satisfaetory I manner. Perhaps the most sought , | after by macbine patrons will be BLACK FOX, PUROTO and RELATIVE. 1.35. PRINCE OF WALES HANDICAP | Of £300; 9 furlongs. I A very select lot and the distance I makes it none the easier to select the likely place getters.. Taitoru is most consistent and appears to run well on any going. Chief Ranger was second in the Great Easter but a poor last in the Great Autumn at Riccarton. Still, nine furlongs should be well within his compass. Onewhetu raeed fajrly well I over the holidays, while Pukeko I appears to be at the very top of his form at present and will run a solid race over this particular distance. Big I Dook may not bo quite the horse ho was twelve months back, but his* form has been fair though a win has not come his way for some time. Master Cyklon may have a 51b. allowance and with 8.1 will be very dangerous. Arctic King will have a track to his liking. Gay Boy has no recent form, but Korero rau a sefcond at the last Wellington meeting and he is another that likes the track with the sting out of it, in fact the heavier the going the better for him. Catalogue won the Feilding • hack cup, but at 8.0 does not appear to have the best of the argument when asked to concede weight to horses that have been successful in quite a few open handicaps. Rona Bay is a decided possibility, as also are Sunee, Haut Monde (only if the track is firm)., Mandamus, Royal Secret and Lord Moutoa. Most monetary support may be forthcoming for PUKEKO, ARCTIC KING and MASTER CYKLON
2.15. WOODHEY HACK HANDICAP. Of £150. Six furlongs. Erebus is a recent winner and Brazen King has been racing well but without luck. Airing is better over a longer course, but Old Surrey goes a good six. Winsome Lu, Allunga, The Bigot, Silver " River, Eara (bracketed with Erebus), Fossicker and Gironde all possess winning qualifications. Three I that may appeal to backers are ALLUNGA, FOSSICKER and GIRONDE. 2.55. CLOVERLEA NURSERY Of £175. About five furlongs. Elenage was third on Monday at I Avondale. Son and Heir ran a first and a second at Tauherenikau. Bluffer is speedy, but her public form is nothing to enthuse over. Of the other juveniles engaged improvenjent is expected from Laughing Chief, Scarf
Dance, Aureus, Girl Pat, Settlement and Gay Molly. The favourite may come from SON AND HEIR, ELANGE and AUREUS. 3.35. AWAPUNI CUP. Of £350; li mile. Collectively they' are hardly up to w.f.a. standard this field. Hazoor, Arctic King and Big Dook are but average handicap class, while Catalogue is only a hack and, though Entail has a Guineas and a Leger to his credit, he has been a dismal failure in his other attempts. Dungraven is reported to have pulled up lame on Tuesday morning. Wild Chase looks like being at odds on. Most money may be carried by WILD CHASE and HAZOOR, 4.35. T. M. JOHNSTON MEMORIAL, Of £200; 6 furlongs. At 8.13 Ben Braggie has his work cut out and it is difficult to see how the handicapper has adjudged him a 21b.
better horse than Pakanui, who, by the way, is xight back to his best form and probably with a track to suit him too. Black Thread won at Feilding, beating Dungarvan and Ben Braggie into second and third place, Peter Beckford may run a better race on Saturday. Great Hope failed at Feilding, but may do better now on the more roomy track. Hunting Mars certainly won at Wairarapa, but was fortunate in getting such a clear jump out, still will have to .be taken into consideration. Of the light weights Acceptable, Severe and Lady Ina may prove the best. The bulk of the betting looks like going the way of PAKANUI, BLACK THREAD and HUNTING MARS 5.0. TE MATAI HACK HANDICAP Of £150. One mile. Roaming, from the other island, has a little form to suggest him having a winning chance. Sanhedrin is a recent winner, also Myriam and Maestro. Earl Colosus, Lady Siegfried, Race Call and Agog have all been in the money of late over middle distances. Happy Hunting won at Gisborne a few months back. Seyfried shoiild go a solid mile now. Reeovery may be'looked for from SEYFRIED, MYRIAM and MAESTRO.
