Some Even Sell in Morocco I ARGENTINA CLOSED

(B* Toleeranh-

WELLINGTON, This Day. -New Zealand apples probably reach more parts of the world than any other commodity exported from the Dominion. A London cable message published on Tuesday stated that merchants I handling New Zealand fruit in the United Kingdom had referred to their quality and the exoellence of the packing. and grading. Although Great Britain is New Zealand 's main market, it is a common sight to see apples from the orchards df this country in the I main Continental oities, including I Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Hamburg, and Amsterdam. Shipments are also made to the West Indies, the East Indics, Ohina, India, Oanada, and South Arnerica, and spasmodic supplies find their way to such placea as Constantinople, Cairo, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Algiers, and Morocco. Discussing the marketa for New Zea* land apples, the secretary of the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board, Mr W. Benzies, said yesterday that the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, who is at present in Bngiand, was negotiating with a view tq reducing the existing barriens by way of duties and quotas against New Zealand | apples entering European countries, Oanada was a good market for New Zealand fruit, particularly this year,

because of the shorfc crop in North Amerioa, Arfangements had been made for stock at Halifax to be sent to Jamaica to supply the West Indies. ijr Benzies said" that Argentina, whibh at one time had been a profltable outlet for Dominion-gro'wn apples, was now cloaed to New Zealand because she had supplies of her own. iThe Dominion still had a footing in [Brazil, and could compete there successfully with Argentina and Chili. This year the Dominion was sending 25,000 bushel cases of apples to Brazil. An endeavour was being made to get into the Panama zone with a view to opening up trade in that part of the

world, and in some of the States in the north' of South America. 'There was a total embargo on the admission of apples into Japan, added Mr Benzies, but New Zealand was sending supplies to Shanghai and Hong Kong, and these were also finding their way to several places inland in -China. Apple shipments went to Manila, New Guinea, Java, Sumatra, Singapore, Calcutta, Madras, Bombay, and Colombo. An endeavour was beiug made to develop a larger market in India, but New Zealand was meeting with severe competition from Australia. The Commonwealth had been successful in making aTrangements for regular weekly shipment to India, but New Zealand had no such facilities. Last year supplies for India were transhippod at Honolulu because it was impossible to ship there through Australia. This year the use of Honolulu as a transhipment base for India was not _available, and it had been BUggested that New Zealand fruit should be transhipped at San Francisco, but because of the heavy ChargeS involved the proposal had to be rejeoted. The board was now endeavouring to make arrangements for transhipment to India from Singapore.
