* Sir James Steel-Maitland, of Havelock North, left yesterday by motor car On a visit to Auckland. Mr Phil Neesham, Auckland, has been appointed sole eelector for the New Zealand Football Association. Mr E. S. Innes, after more than 30 years ' service in the Government Audit Oilice, lias retired on account of illhealth. Dr. A, G. Bell, resident medical officer at the Distriet Hospital, Waipukurau, has resignedj and is proceeding to England for post-graduate studies. Mr ,V. Hawke was last night elected the xepresentative of the Hawke's Bay Cricket Association on the Five Million Club. Mr J. E. Henrys, handicapper to the Canterbury JoCkey Club, has resigned. He has served the C.J.C. for 46 years and ia the only handicapper the club has ever employcd. Mr W. J. White, Who has been in charge of the Marino Department, Napier, for the past five years, has received noti.ee of his transfer to Dunedin and will be leaving Napier shortly to take up his new position. Oanon Wilfred Williams and Mts Williams have returne.d to Napier after being the guests of Miss E. Davios, Gisborne. Canon Williams, as sUperintendent of Maori missions, has been on a tour in connection with his work. Dr. J. W. Craven, medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, has left for Sydney by the Aorangi. He will represent the Auckland Hospital Boatd at a cancer conference at Oanberra next week, and later will study administrative methods and inspeci equipment at Sydney and Melbourno hOspitals, Dr, j. A* StaUworthy, formerly of Auckland, has been appointed to the staff of the Chelsea Hospital, He went to London in 1934 aB holder of the New Zealand Obstetrical Scholarship, and beeame a member of the College of ObStetricians and Cynaecologists (London) the following year, gaining his F.R.C.S. at the end of 1936. Miss Elsie Olark, formerly organist of the Hastings Presbyterian Church, has been appointed matron of Iona College in place of Miss E. M. Allen, who is to be married to Mr John Caznpbell, Waikato. Miss Clark was more recently matron of the New Plymouth Girls' High School and the Wellington Boys ' College. Sir Walter Carncross, Speaker of the Legislative Council and the Dominion 's oldest Parliamentarian, celebrated his eighty-second birthday at his home in Eltham last week. Born at Bendigo, Australia, in 1855, he has had a unique Parliamentary career, being thfe last of ■the staunch band of Seddon Liberals. Despite his age and his severe illness of a few months back, Sir Walter still gets about with much of his old-time vigour. The transfer is at , present taking place of Captain G. M. MeCaskill, of Palmerston North, Staff Officer of the Sixth Regimental Distriet, Adjutant of the Manawatu Mounted Eifles and Area Officer in charge of Area 6B, and Captain A. Bongard, M.O., Adjutant of the Hawke's Bay Regiment, Napier, who are exchanging positions.
