Dog Triai TrophiOs Three miniatufe cups for competition in ihe eveuts for local maiden dogs have been presented to the Te Pohue Dog Trial Olub by the presidOnt, Mr. J. F, McKeosiek, of- Rukumoana. The club desires to express its gratitude to Mr. McKeesick, who takes a keen interest in the trials in the Te Pohue distriet. In all three centres, .he said, on his retnfn to Napier, he received a Very fair hearing. Mr M. M. Cooper's Return. No information has been received by the relatives of Mr M. M. Cooper, ilhodes Scholar and Oxford Rugby "Blue", that he will be returning to Hawke's Bay during the comipg season. It was stated at the meeting of the Hastings Rligby Sub-Union on Monday night that h© would be in Hawke's Bay for six or eight weeks from the end of this month. Members of Mr Coopers family, however, say that their information is that he .will be returning for a period at the end of September. Marewa Basketbaii Courts, Tlie possibility of six hard basketbaii courts being laid down in the Marewa Block was mentioned by the President, Hr H. Sergent at the annual meeting of the Napier Basketbaii Association held last evening. The Borough Council had been approached dn the matter, stated Mr Sergent, afid had expressed itself as being willing to consider the matter favourahly. If these courts are laid down the association will apply to have the New Zealand Basketbaii ehampionships held in Napier on some occasion. Runanga Bush. A reply to a, request for the preservation of an area of bush at the Runanga Hilf on th© Napier-Taupo road, recently made by the Napier Chamber Of Commerce through the Hon, W. E, Barnard, M.P., has been received by Alr Barnard. The Minister in charge of scenery preservation, the Hon. F. Langstone has replied stating that certain inquiries into the position have already been made, but further information is required to establish the position. The information desired is now being cOlleCted by officers of the department, and the Chamber will be advised of the result of these inquiries. study In Contrasts. It was a gathering of farmerp, and nuturally the discussion xevfirted to Cowis and pigs. One farmer casually mentioned that in two successive litters two Large White sowb had given birth to an aggregate of 66 young pigs, of which 42 had been reared. Each time the two sows had aggregated 33 pigs. One sow had been particularly prolific, having contributed 37 Of the 66, producing litters of 18 and 19. The opposite extreme was recordod by anotlier farmer, who stated that a fine sow of his had givon birth to a litter of two pigs, and the same day a "wee bit of a eafc" had produced six kitteus. End of Bathlng Season. • The swimming pool at the Napiei public baths will be emptied for the winter months afteT Friday, Apri] 30, although the public will still be able to have hot salt-water baths, Except for the more hardy swimmers who carry on during the winter, bathers of Napier Usually take the olosing of the public pool as an indication that the Swimming season is over. The "Twelve 0'Clockers)' are now arranging the programme for their annual dinner at the baths on April 30. After their usual swim in the pool and surf, they congregate in on© of the larg© dressing rooms and bid farewell to the swimming pool until next summer. They all knew the need of the navy as a system of insurance for their homes, and the sooner, therefore, they inculcated a sea Bense in the young the better, for whereas a ship could be built in a short period it took years to make a seaman. In Australia the league took children out in hoata and got them interested in the sea.
