Dunedin Coronation Service Criticised PRESBYTERIAN'S VIEW
(By Telegraph-
DUNEDIN, Last Night. Describing the proposed order of service for use in churches at the tim« of the coronation as "too Judaistio and nationalistic" in flavour for a commemoration in a Christian church, the clerk of the Dunedin Presbytery, the Rev. J. ,D. Smith, speaking at a meeting of that body to-day, criticised the action of the civic authorities in accoiding special recognition to a service in St. Paul's Cathedral without reference to any other churches,, Mr Smith went on to say that it looked like creating a State Ghurch, and it appeared to him that the civic committee, which, undey the chairmanship of the mayor, the Rev. E. T. Oox, had a handling of such matters, was determined to make it as difficult as possible for any bqt the Anglican Ghurch to hold a service on the morning of Coronation Dny. As a matter of fact, when questioned on .the matter of the cathedral service this year, Mr Gox had told hina that he recognised no responsibility for taking the initiative in such matters, and that if the Oouncil of Christian Congregations liked to go to sleep that wa& its own affair. Personally, Mr Smith added, he favoured the holding of the morning service jn the F^rst Church. The Goun« cil of Christian Congregations had been refused permission. to use the Town Hall on the morning of Coronation Day becaus© of the cathedral service that was being held at the same time. The Rev. H. A. Mitchell approved of the idea of a service in First Church, but said he hoped jbhere would be no question of pittiug oue churohi against another. The Rer. H. J. Ryhurn urged that they should hold their own service in their own way. After all, they should remember that whatever the Presbyterian Church might have heen in the past, it represented a very small minority of the community. It was decided that a service in First Church as suggested by the clerk should be held.
