To-Oay's Anniversary. The twentieth ' anniversary of the declaration of war on Germany by the Dnited States of America falls to-day. N.Z. Rugby Union Finance. Promising Athiete. At th© King's College (Auckland) annual athletic sports meeting, which was conducted on Saturday last, J. L. Bickerdike, eon of Petective-Sergeant Bickerdike, of Christchurch, and formerly of Napier, won the senior cups with 25 points, 11 points ahead of the runner up. Bickerdike won seven events, and put up fresh College records of 92ft 4}ins in th© discus throw and 39ft 3in. in the shot-putt. The previous records were 89ft 9ins., and 38ft 5ins. respectively. No settlement No settlement has been arrived at in the waterfront dispute at Gisborne, where the Napier motor vessel Koau is being held up. Waterside workers object to the fact that the crew on small er vessels such as the Koau are mstructed to work the winches and close the hatches in the loading and discharging of cargo at coastal ports, and refuse to work with the crew, The oners of the Koau, the Richardson Cmpany, have been in contact with the principals of the Watersiders' Union in Wellington, but so far no decision has been arrived at. The Koau is a vessel of 144 tcms gross register. Fire In Napier, Clothing and a quantity of preserves were destroyed when fire broke out in ■ihe washhouse of Mrs M, E. Borlace's residence, 15 Thompson road, Napier, at 9.30 o'clock this morning. The fire started when Mrs Borlace was called rway from the washhouse to speak ou the telephone. Prompt actions, by the Central Fire Brigade saved the building from total destruction. Th© building is coverpd by insurance to the extent of £20. It is situated to the rear of a confectionary shop and dairy known as the Bluff Hill Store, and but for che prompt arrival of the brigade it is likely that the store would have been damaged by the flames.
