"AMAZING TIRADE"

-Press Ass'ociatioa.)

N.Z. Herald's Comment •ABDICATION RIGMAROLE

(By Telegraph

AUCKLAND, This Day. "An amazing.tirade," comments tbe New Zealand Herald editorially on Mr Scrimgeour's attack. It adds: "This mttack b-y a civil servant will be conneeted in the public mind with the onalaughts recently made on the Press by members of the Government. They begin to make the appearance of an organised campaign of vilification, and the people may well ponder on the motives animatiiigi any apparently concerted offensive. They will also wonder at the methods used, . if they care to peruse the wild utterances brbadcast by Mr Scrimgeour, a professing Christian minister . serving on the Friendly Road-" The paper adds that New Zealanders and visitors of standing have testified to the high standards and good tone maintained by the daily Press and asks if Mr Scrimgeour can explain who is "Mr Swinton." Was he ever editor of the New York Times? "The suggestion that newspapers would not accept advertisements drawing attention to radio programmes unless they were paid double rates is •imply not true," the Herald adds. As for the extiaordinary rigwarole about the part played by the Press in the abdication of Edward, the people oould once again judge.for themselves, Jke public would remember that the Press of New Zealand aftd Britain and throughout the Empire had Observed

strict reticence until official notice was taken of the ex-King's att'airs. The Herald concludes; "The public can judge and has, in fact, become accustomed to * higher standards from those very newspapers Mr Scrimgeoui' attempts to vilify."
