Waipukurau County's Objection

W All UJv UliA U , This Day. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council was held on Saturday. Present : Messrs A. C. Russell (chairman), M. Tansey, A. W. JSiliott, L. M. Monckton, H. T. Wright, J. Swinburn. The clerk-engineer (iMi' R. li. Price) was also present. The secretary of the Wellington Industrial Union of Workers wrote regarding the forxnation of a union for local body employees. Mr Price expressed the opinion that the salaries asked for the employees were in some respects far too high. "This scheme might be satisfactory for the larger offices," said the chairman, "but in the case of a small office like ours it would mean strangulation-" It was decided to object to the proposed scale of salaries. The engineer, Mr R. B. Price, reported as under: — Hatuma Riding: The priming coat is being laid on the new section of the Hatuma highway and the road will he opened to traffic on the morning of April 5. Trucks have been engjaged on improving corners on Rangitoto roads and removing material from the grader. The jN" apier- W el lington highway has been patched and a small pipe culvert is being placed near J. Hobson's. Mount Herbert Riding: The tar coat has been laid on the Raceeourse highway and the sealing work should be begun in about a week's time. The grader has raked in metal on the unsealed section of Porangahau highway and riding roads, but rain is required to bring them up to the usual standard. Purimu Riding. — General work has been carried out in this riding and channels and shoulders have cut on the Tourere and Flemington roads. This work will be continued towards the end of next week, the grader having been brought away to more urgent work.
