(From

WAIROA, This Day. The 1937 season of the Wairoa Golf Club was opened on Saturday with a good gathering of patrons of the game, including visitors from Tuai, Ruakituri, Gisborne and Maraenui (Napier) clubs. The morning was cloudy and threatening, and no doubt deterred many from attending. As it was the rain was not heavy till the official opening had been deelared, and then the heavens opened and a heavy downpour put a stop to play in the mixed foiirsome arranged for the occasion. A dainty afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the club. Mr H. Crichton, president of the club, taking advantage of a pause in the rain, said he was very pleased to be again present on their .golf links, thia time to open the 1937 season. They would all agree that in spite of tlie rain, the official opening of the season was a happy occasion. They had no doubt by now forgotten all about the burdens they carried last year in the shape of handicaps, and he wished them all good luck as they were preparing to launch out into another season. He extended, a welcome to all present, and he hoped they would have. a happy time, if not that day, in the days to come. They would see that the links had been greatly improved during the year, gnllies cleaned up, and greens topdressed, and the links were now looking better than ever, thanks to tho greom keeper, Mr Aufdermaur. The time had now been reached in the history of the club when it had been found advisable to engage a professional to coaeh new members and improve the play of others He desired to thank the ladies, who had again agreed to carry out the afternoon tea, whieh meant a lot to the club, especially in regard to finance.
