WAIHI, This Day. Between £2000 and £3000 damage was done when fire destroyed a general store, restaurant and living quarters at Waihi Beach, owend by Mr N. G. 1 Keatinge. The owner was away at the time and Mrs Smith, who was in charge, and a housemaid escaped in their night attire with only a few personal effects, everything else beina destroyed. No water supply was availahle, but the Waihi Fire Brigade and bucket brigades were able to save the bakohouse and a detached sleeping accommodation as well as a near-by dwellina owned by Mr R. Ray. The building was insured for £700 and the contents for £400.
