A Taupo Public Scandal
W. H
. HTLr,.
(To the Editor.) Sir, — My heading might appear harsh, but were you a resident of Taupo, permanent or temporary, I feal sure, aware of the facts, you would consider my heading somewhat mild. The scandal I refer to is this, Sir: the daily and nightly appearance on the public highway, to the danger of tourist . rtaffic of between eight or nine, and at times as many as 12 cows, under no control whatsoever; and I ara f flrthe'r prepared to state that no "privat'e j garden within the environe of Taupo is | safe from the depredations of these | animals; and assumiflg tho local body I of Taupo has no control over an affair j Such as this, I would respectfully sug- . ' gest the State should step in and prose- . ! cute . the owners heayily or even j eequester the animals, | My letter is on behalf of a great ; ! numlrer of owners of sections and tho : users of highways, and, unless sonu?thing is done urgently to meet this growing evil, serious accidents will ccrtainly occur in- the district between the Terraces Hotel and Taupo township. - Unfortunately the owners (t) of the cows will not admit any ownership, aird; surely therefore the cows can be taken and sold to those more capable to safeguard the interests of the publie at | large. Thre is flo rpound" at Taupo, j herlee the difficulty; but I make the j plea to one of the publie. departments • of State to b'ear out my statements ajrd to safeguard motorists and the general ( public from this serious menaco. — Yours, efcc.,
Taupo, April 2. 1937.
