Poor Showing in Match at Auckland BOWLERS ON TOP

CBy Teleeraph -

AUCKLAND, Last Night. England's tail collapsed to-day in the match against the Auckland-Wellington combined team and in response to the |combined team's first innings score of ;183, M.C.C. made only 205. When Istumps were drawn owing to a bad llight, Combined had lost two wickets '•for 22 xuns. The game open quietly this mornhxg, iWyatt (30) and Worthington (19) xxot iattempting to force the pace off the Ibowling of Simpson and "Matheson, and |in half an hour only 20 runs had been added. The attack w^s varied by McCoy taking over from Simpson, the ichange xesulting in Wyatt teaching ins fifty with a hard drive to the boundary. The dull game was enlivened when Worthington went ont to hit McCoy and narrowly missed snicking it into Matheson 's hands at first slip. Bush then took over at McCoy 's end and his second ball Wyatt patted into Postle's hands at silly mid-on. 96—1 — 56. It had taken 45 minutes to add 40 runs to the overnight score. McCoy went down to Matheson ;s end and when Hardstaff came in the game |assumed a brighter complexion. He iopened his shoulders to McCoy, straight Idriving him just short of six. . Worthiington twice pulled Bush to the boundJary. Then there was a confident appeai ifor a snick by Worthington off Bush [which. Blandf ord gathered in and the lumpire upheld it. — 114 — 2 — 38. Leyland and • Hardstaff carried ou soundHy to 130 when Matheson telieved McCoy. Hardstaff immediately lifted one which fell clear of Wallace at long* off. Hardstaff then pulled Bush to tho Jfence and saw his partner have a iucky lescape when Matheson f ailed to hold !one which Leyland (11) returned to the bowler. A few minutes before one o'ciock Simpson was trxed again, Leyland gliding him nicely jfco leg and Hardstaff placing him through the slips |to the boundary. Then Leyland made another mistake in playing a defensive stroke to Matheson, giving the bowler the simplest of catches. — 157—3 — 18. . Matheson and Simpson tOok. up the bowling when the afternoon play began. At 163 Fishlock lifted Matheson .straight into Whitelaw's hands at short mid-off.— 1.63— 4— 3. Allen, the English captain, was next jin. Simpson got a good ball to Alleu !which just skimmed the bails. The next one came low and shattered the English captain's wicket. — 170—5 — 4. Hardstaff reached his 50 by lifting a no-ball from Matheson to the line. A few balls later he put one up to 'short forward leg and Postles dived to make a good eatch. — 192 — 6 — 51. Without a xun being added Verity xe.tuxned a ball to McCoy. — 192 — 7 — 6. Sims and Copson were now together jand Copson got a start with a single. ;Sims put the ball up on the off but ,although W&llace got under it, he dropped the catch. Copson was also missed at the wicket by Blandford off Matheson and at this point 200 was raised amidst applause. Sims then lashed out to McCoy and Hook, stand--ing on the edge of the line near the sight screen, judged the catch perf ectly. A further thrill followed for McCoy bowled Copson with the next ball ancl the end came in Matheson 's f ollowing over when he clean bowled Duekworth. The innings closed for 205. Rain set in just after the M.C.C. innings closed and delayed play for over an hour. The wicket was covered and the game was - restarted at 4.35, Postles and Whitelaw opening the local team's second innings. Whitelaw was dismissed in the first over and Ell soon followed. Tho score at stumps was 22 for two wickets. ENGLAND. ' First Innings.
