Car of Fire. Seeing flames issuing from the bonnet of his car parked outside the Waipukurau Post Ofiice, a motorist became alarmed and the fire alarin was sounded, but by the time the brigade arrived the blaze had been quelled with an extinguisher from the telephone exchange. Little damage was done. The fire is believed to have been due to a short circuit in the electrical system. Earthquakes Effect. Noticing the lights on in a shop in main street of Waipukurau at 2.50 a.m. on Thursday the nightwatchman became suspicious of burglars. They had not been on when he passed '35 minutes before. He quickly roused the manager and together they rushed back to the shop, prepared to surprise intruders; but there was no one inside, and the mystery was solved when it was found that an earthquake at 2.30 p.m. had caused the lighting switch to make a connection. A short shock of earthquake was reported from the Waipawa district at 3.15 a.m., on Wednesday morning, and there have been a number of light shocks in Central Hawke's Bay during the last few months.

Mclntosh shortly atter 8 o'clock on Thursday night. The steering wheel of Mr Mclntosh' s car was damaged but no oue was injured. Waipukurau Baths. The Waipukurau swiinming baths will be constructed this winter and will be in use at the begiunmg of next summer, it is oificiaiiy stated. The Swimrniug Baths Asseciatlon has the assurance of Mr H. M. Christie, M.P., that the Government has decided to grant sufficient assistanee to enabie tlie baths to be completed, the secretary (Mr F. A. G. Duun) stated yesterday. The baths are to be 75ft. long by 30ft wide, with a maximum depth of 12ft. and a minimum depth of 3ft. Adequate dxiessing and seating accommodation will be provided. Valedictory. Miss E. S. Davy, of the Waipawa Post Ofiice staff, before her departure for New Plymouth, was presented bv the postmaster, Mr H. Hawke, On beha.ll' of the staff, with a solid ieather attache case suitably inscribed. Mr Hawke rel'erred to the long and efficient service rendered by Miss Davy tp tbe department and tlie public. He congratulated ber on her well-merited prcmotion and wished her every sucies,«* in her new sphere. Miss Davy feelingly returned thanks, and stated that vvhilo she regretted haidng to leave her home town, but in the department oue had to move on to achievo success. Cheers for Miss Davy concluded a very happy liLtle function.

Waipawa Rainfall. During March rain fell in Waipawa on eight days, a total of 1.64in. being recorded. This makes the total rainfall for 1937, 6.38ins. Bowls at Waipawa. A further match in the . Waipawa Bowling Club's gairs championship was played yesterday, Walker and Eagle defeating Jopson and Patterson by 30 to 10. Greenmeadows Cards. The Greenmeadows Show committee held a very ruceessful "500" evening on Thursday. First honours in the ladies ' section went to Mrs F. Monk, with nine games, Mr W. Cullen securing the gentlemen's prize with seven games. Lucky number prizes went to Mrs W. Colwill and Mr R. Wright. A special competition was won by Mr P. McCormack. Supper was served by the ladies' committee. Cards Makotuku. The euchte party held by the Makotuku branch of the New Zealand Labour Party in the public hall was well patronised, 32 eard enthusiasts sitting down to play. ond with 9. Minor Accidents. A serious accident befell Mrs V. Patterson, of Waipawa, in a very simple manner. She stumbled across the blade of an axe which ihflieted a deep gash near the right ankle, severing the tendons. After first-aid had been rendered by Mr Patterson, she was taken to Dr. Norris and then to' the hospital, where the operation of i joining the tendons was performed. While. erecting a fence on his property, Mr Alex. Baines, Ormondville, crushed a toe some days ago. He injured the same foot a short time before, so that the fresh mishap has been more serious than it would have been otherwise. Waipawa Ladies' Cuild. The monthly meeting of the Methodist. Ladies' Guild was held in the Waipawa Methodist Church, Mrs S. 13ott presidmg over a fair attendanee of members. The president read a derotional article. Mrs Bott farewelled Mfs A. O. Jones, the departing minister's wife, presenting her with a beautiful bouquet of roses and fern. She mentioned the great help Mrs Jones had been to her husband in his circuit work in Waipawa.
