OBITUARY

MRS EMMA SPARKSMAN There passed away on Thnrsday evening a very old and respected resident of the district in the person of Mrs Emma Sparksman, releet of the late Thomas Cornelius Sparlcsman. Born at Somerset, England, in 1842, she was married to her late husband in 1868. Mr and Mrs Sparksman sailed from England for New Zealand in September, 1872, by the sailing vessel Glenglora. Their experienee, althongh adventurous, was not an enviable one, for the sailing ship became becalmed in the tropics and later was caught in a tremendons storm and dismasted, being finally wreeked off the Cape of Good Hppe. Seven weelcs were spent lin Mauritins for repairs, and the Glenglora finally landed in New, Zealand in March, 1873, after having been nine months on the voyage. Mrs« Sparksman, together with her Imsband and family, spent a few years in Wellington. Later they moved to the Wairarapa, going to that district before the railway was put throngh, «nd carrying on farming for many years. In 1918 they came to reside in Twyford, where they lived with their daughter, Mrs. 'David Lowe. Eor the past few months Mrs. Sparksman had resided with her dacjghter, Mrs. Barnes, Poukawa, and it was at Mrs. Barnes' s home that she passed peacefully away. "Grandma" Sparksman, as she was

affectionately known to her friends, endeared herself to all with whom she came in contaet. Although in her 95ti^ year, she was able until a few weeks a go to execute dainty hand-worked arfieles. The sympathy of the district will be extended to the adult family of nine —Mrs. 3). Lowe, late of Twyford and now of Otahuhu, Mrs W. Barnes, Poukawa, Mrs. X Elux, Lower Hutt, Mrs. X Smith, Auckland, Mr. A. Sparksman, Twyford, Mr. E. W. Sparksman, Hastings, Mr. H. Sparksman, Twyford, Mr* E. Sparksman, Eketahuna. There are 30 grand children and 10 great grandchildren.
