Population Refuse to Leave Madrid WOMEN DEFIANT (Received 3, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, April 2. A Madrid message says that, despite incessant bombjng and shelling the women are reluctant to evacuate their homes and turn a deaf ear to the threats and peladings of Government inspectors, who have evacuated 650,000 but 500,000 of these are refugees from other towns. Cafes, theatreg and oinemas are paoked, and the people are apparently careless of the bombardment. There* is little fuel and the use of gas is rqstricted to hospitals, harracks and vital serviees. Food supplies are at present adequate. The anti-profiteering measures have been effective, A typical restaurant meal consists of soup, ham, vegetables, spaghettj, oranges and
pletnty of bread. A pint of wine costs 2/-. A special two-oours© meal supplied to workers coptg ninepence.,
