Top Price £53 for Five-Year Draught Mare SPRING-CARTERS TO £30 Over 200 entries were offered at today's horse fair at Stortford Lodge. For good sorts showing Breeding and souzid constitution tliere was a satis- - factory market, but for other sorts 5ralo.es were below expectations- and the selling -was dragging and dull, The large yarding included many aged entries which were hard to quit, more especially tbe old station hacks! Oue of tbe outstanding entries was a fine line of Maraekakaho-bred Bonny Lad draughts offered by tbe Hawke's Bay Farmers 3 Co-operative Association .on account of Mr O. Ciarkson, of Maraekaho. These entries all reflected tbeir good breeding, and tbe keen bidding sbowed tbe demand tbat exists for good Clydesdales. Tbe top price was £53, for a fine fonr-year-old maro. Tbe best young spring-carters made to £30, but many of tbese sbowing age and in poor order generally were not wanted,- Among the backs some by Gainscourt sold readily to xealise to £13 10/-. Tbe sale opened very quietly, tbe very large attendance sbowing little inclination to liven np tbe selling, witb tbe result tbat most of tbe opening lots offered were passed. Witb tbe offermg of Mr Ciarkson 's entries tbe selling brigbtened considerably. On account of Mr George Young, Blaek Stag, a single eight-year-old siaunch gelding, a first-class sbafter and nseful for any heavy work, was passed at £33. On account of tbe eame vendor, a nine-year-old mare used to all classes of ckain work, baving a good set of legs and sound in every respect was passed at £32 10/-. A tbree-year-old draugbt mare, well bred and broken to cbain work but not to tbe sbafts, realised £40. Tbis young mare was tboroughly stauncb and sbould develop into a particularly useful type. An aged cbestnut spring-cart gelding, poorly-mouthed, broken to all places and tboroughly quiet, was passed at £6 15/-. A tbree-year-old gelding broken to challis, tbe " makings of a first-class fipring-cart borse, thoroughly sound and Well developed and baving a particularly good top-line, was passed at £27. An aged spring-cart mare broken to all places and baving a tip-top moutb, a useful sort for breaking a young borse alongside, was passed at £28. A seven-year-old mare broken to tbe saddle and harnegs, useful as a polo pony, was sold at £9 10/-. On account of Mr O. Ciarkson, Maraekakaho, a nine-year-old draught gelding broken to all places, tboroughly sound and stauneh and having a fine set of beavy legis, realised £41. On account of the same vendor a 7-year-old draugbt broken to the shafts and used to beavy work, tboroughly stauncb and baving a strong constitution, made £5 3/- Tbis mare would breed a particularly good type of foal. From the same course a 14-year-old mare broken to all places and never used for breeding purposes sold at £46. A Bonny Lad four-year-old draught mare, broken to all work, an nnusually stauncb borse and suitable for all classes of beavy work, sold at £53. Anotber Bonny Lad four-year-old mare broken to tbe sbafts, a good leader, made £52. Tbis young mare bas great prospects and would be suitable for all classes of work. A four-year-old saddle pony, useful for a shepherd on the flats, sold at £11 10/-. A five-year-old gelding, used to the saddle, but not broken to harneas realised £10. On account of Alr Jack Thom, a five-year-old upstandiug1 hack, being a first class saddle borse and a good jumper, sold at £13 10/-. On account of tbe same vendor, a tfour-year-old saddle mare, tboroughly stauncb and used to beavy hill work. sold at £12. A four-year-old back gelding used to paek work was passed at £5. A Gainscourt four-year-old gelding back, a stylish mover whieb had been very successful in tbe show-ring met tbe market at £12 10/A tbree-year-old Gainscourt mare jusfc broken to tbe saddle brought £10 5/-. In from Whakarara, an aged medi-um-draugbt mare, witb a good mouth and in foal to a Tikokino sire, being hroben to all classes of cbain work,, made £16. On account of Moteo Station, Puketapu, a stauncb seven-year-old draupht mare broken to all implement work, ,an outstanding farm horse, realised £41. _ On account of tbe same vendors, an eight-year-oid draught mare, used to tbe shafts and •chains, stauncb and thoroughly sound and well suited to all beavy work, sold at £40.
