PUZZLING AGREEMENTS
Interpretation Problem "MAKES A LAWYER SHUDDER" (It makes a lawyer shudder to r.ead them," said Mr J. H. Sheat in the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court, when referring to the construction of clauses in the Taranaki dairy workers' agreement. It was stated that the parties, employers and employees, were responsible for the phraseology. Counsel said there was no interpretation clause and alfhough the terms ' ' m anagers, ' * " workers, " " hands ' ' and "men" were used, not one of them was defincd. Dealiug with the question at issue, wliether a manager could be regarded as a "man," counsel said it was eonceivable that "worker«" and * 'hands" might be interpreted to exclude manogers, but- not by any stretch of the imagination could the term "man" be made to exclude managers. i 1 These agreements should never come before a Court of lawjrers for interpretation," ' said Mr W.
