HOUSING EXPERIMENT
- Childless Couples' Flats FIRSJ TRIAL AT DUNEDIN The experiment in. the building 0f. two-unit or seml-detached dwellings on one floor, suitable for married people without children, which the Housing Department is making in Dunedin, Will be extended later to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and other centtes. These dwellings will be let at a lower rental than the four'roOmed cottages. The sito of the Dunedin experiment is the Liberton Settlement, where 38 hou'ses are to be built under contracts which close on April 13. Two sections are being utilised, and the two-unit deSign built in such. a position that the dividing wall between the two flats is on the joint boundary. It will be of brick, with a . cavity, and should be moderately sound-proof. Each flat will have a normal-sized seetion. The saving in the design will be in the Central dividing wall, the common roof and the central chimney. The building will be of briek veneer, involving a woodeu frame with outer walls of briek. Oue flat will contain a living room, 16ft. by 15ft. 6in., a befil'oom, kitchen, botkrOOm and laundry. The adjoining flat has all these tooms, plus a sunroom on an angle off the living room.
