Car Plunges Over, 30-Foot Bank RESCUE EFFORTS FAIL

NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night When a sedan car plunged over ai 30-foot bank into the Awakino, rivfir to-day; Mrs Ida Dingle, aged 47, of Tauwhare, Waikato, was drowned. Her husband, Percy Dingle, drivei; of tho car, had a forbunate escapo with shock and cuts from brokea glass. The Dingles were xeturning from ^ visit to their two sons at school at Wanui. At a narrow bend in the gorgd they met a car and had iasufficiecf room, the car crasbing over the bank into the Awakino, 'ft.ver and, lan.ding on its wheels in 12 feet of swiftly-flowing water. Mr Dingle kicjre.d out the wiadow of the car and crawled through. He atJ tempted to drag his wife, who wai unconscious, after him, but was washed off the running-board. He made his way] back to the car but Mrs Dingle had then disappeared. Mr Dingle called for assistance atnd although injured hef assisted the poliee in the seaich and dragging of the river till nightfall, but the body was not recovered. • The car met by the Dingles did not stopj but the driver might no.t have' been awaxe of the aceident. | Besides two sons at the Wanganui Collegiate School, Mr Dingle has a son aged eleven at home.
