PENGUIN AT NAPIER

Problem of Finding it a Home CORNWALL PARK SUGGESTED: Aa unusual visitor to the Hardinge road foreshore at Port Ahuriri on Monday moming was a young penguin. It was found on the rocks, "and temporarily adopted as a pet. The bird was soon very friendly with its captor, and now shows no inclination to leave, so that the household, faced with the problem of finding food for it, has instituted inquiries to discover if it cannot be housed in a proper aviary such as that at Cornwall Park, Hastings, where it would receive proper food and treatment. The young bird, which is about 14 inches high, was found yesterday by Mrs. H. E. Axcher. As it sat on the rocks and made no effort to move away, she ventured to pick it up. The bird resented the treatment for a time, showing its feelings by pecking Mrs. Archer on the Eands and nose, but when it had been taken to her home and offered a meal of brOad-crumbs, it became quite docile, and has now apparently decided to "adopt" the household as its future home.

Mr. and Mrs. Archer, however, feel that they cannot give the penguin proper food at all time, and are endeavouring to find a proper home for it. It is thought that to liberate it would mean that it would be killed by cats or dogs, as it cannot fly and shows no inclination to take to the water again.
