/ Mr Len Sowman} who is an inmat,e of Royston Hospital, is makingi satisfactory progress after his operatioii. Mr J. Woods, of Kauangaroa, is staying with his daughter, Mrs Kiddell, Heretaunga street, Hastings. Mr Malton Murray has resigned the position of general secretary of the New Zealand Allianc© from to-day. Mr Murray has been in the organisation's service 16 years, the last six and a-half as general secretary. Mr E. W. Hullett, chief chemiet to the Wheat Research Institute, will leave for America and Europe'on April 20, and will return at the end of the year. Dr. Melville will be in charge of the laboratory during Mr Hullett 's absence. Sir Harry Lauder passed through Napier to-day on his way to Taupo to have a week's fishing before going on to Auckland. He was accompanied by i his niece, Miss Greta Lauder, and Mr Nimmo, of Wellington. Sir Harry 's New Zealand holiday tour ends in a ' month, but he hopes to return to this country as soon as possible. Mr F. E. Smith, representing the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, leaves to-day for Wellington to attend a Dominion conference on bush preservation and amenity planting which will open on Thursday. His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Galway, will preside at the conference, and Cabinet will be represented by the Hon. F. Langstone, Minister of Scenery Preservation, and the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs. Two other Hawke's Bay delegates will be Messrs W. Harvey and Guthrie Smith, of Napier.
