WAIPUKURAU RACES

"The Barb.")

The Runniiig Reviewed

(By

On accouilt of the Dannevirke race meeting to be held at Waipukurau on Saturday next, the running of the horses last Monday may be of interest to raeegoers. • » • The meeting opened with the Maiden Race, for which Kong's Hope was made favourite, despite the fact that he was ridden by an' apprentice who was having his first ride, The winner, Grey Molly, was ridden a well-judged race by S, Anderson, who was in fine form, as he rode four winners during the afternoon. Asset ran a little better than she has been doing up this way, being gjreatly assisted by J. Walsli. Parry was third to Grey Molly and Asset. He was allowed to drift over the fisrt bit, and made his run too soon. •' • » ■ Hunter' s morn Was backed down to a short price in the five-furlong hack race, and got' off tho mark at top speed. Tycoon jumped out all right, but perhaps his 9.7 anchored him over the first portion of the raice as he appeared to be making heavy weather of his task, He came from well back to be the only One to make any impression on Hunter's Morn at the finishThe lattey was too far ahead, and won by the best part of five lengths. Quake was a moderate third and the Wood-ville-owned and trained Gainscourt mare, Vienna, fourth. The others will need to make a big improvement between now and Saturday to be even voted an outside chance. • • • Luculliw Lad beat the opposition easily in the mile hack. He was first out, and taking up the position of pacemaker, piloted the field all the way and was never headed. Agog ran a fair race for another seeond. Tractile had every chance, but there was not a great deal of inerit in her third. There was a rush to be on Skyway the laat minute or so, but a poor fourth was his best on the day. Trailer was fairly well supported, but he let his eupporters down. * * Young Hector Mnrray went very close in stealing the Waipukurau Cup on Tareha. Getting well away the Cape Horn gelding very soon went to the front, and bowling along freely was at one * time about ten lengths ahead. Eventually Anderson, on the favourite, 'Soho, set out, and it was only Soho's better racing condition that allowed him to catch Tareha on the post and beat bim. Passion Flower was a fair third, and although she is not exactly on the improve will be more at home in the seven-furlong event this week-end. • ' • • As it turned out there were only two ip the two-year-old race, Arini and

Felicitation. The former was quickest away and very soon held a commanding lead, Over the last two furlongs Felicitation put in her claim, but Arini, ridden from the top of the straight, hung on long enough to collect the major portion of ) the stake. The race will do Felicitatibn good as she was in jieed of a race. Tullamore, who was plodding aloug in the rear over the first half of the journey, made a f orward movement to. gain third money. This filly shooild make a handicap maro next season. • • • They were not a very good lot that cont&sted this gentleman- riders ' race. Over the concluding -stages there were only two who had a chance, Marching Song and Count Willonyx. At the distance Marching Song appeared _ as though he had no serious opposition, but all of a sudden Mr Cowie, on Count Willonyx, ranged up alongside the favourite, "who at that moment was galloping as straight as a gun "oarrel, but immediately the Count challenged him Marching Song hegan to bore out. • • • Nereus made a one-horse race of the hack six over the concluding stages. His task was made easier by the run-ning-off of Clavercourt. Fossicker was second three lengths back with Mahaanui a nose away third. The latter, when he gains the required racing condition, should be a useful welter gelding. Recitation raced below expectations. » • • The Flying Handicap Tesulted in a win for that consistent and honest mare Lavina. Gasman gave Lavina a hard fight, and he is oue that may improve with that race. Wasteland was a moderate third. Tycoon, who was fourth, ran below his best.
