BOWLERS' CONCERT

Very Enjoyable Evening Bowlers of Hawke' s Bay gathered in force at the Hastings Assembly HaU on Saturday evening for the first smoke eoncert arranged by the centre. The evening was a great success in every way, and no doubt will encourage the officials to make it an annual event. Mr F. D. Logan, president of the Centre, presided. Mr J. P. Smith, the "father of bowling" in Hawke' s Bay was given a rousing reception when he entered the hall. Mr Logan extended a welcome to everybody, and expressed his appreciation of the splendid attendance. He thanked the committee especially Messrs J. Sloan and Wilmer, for their efforts in arranging the entertainment programme, which was in charg6 of Mr J. Ld Compte. During the evening the H-B. District Shield, which was won for the second time by the Hastings Club, was handed over to the president of that club, Mr A. Christie. and the Smith Cup, for the singles championship of the centre, was presented to Mr W. Graham, of the Hastings club, this being Mr Graham's second win in this competition. He was heartily applasuded. The ehampion fours was won by the , Waipawa team, and a Waipawa pair, Messrs Shackleford and Patterson annexed the pairs championship.

Mr J. P. Smith, who with his iate brother presented the Smith Cup, said that he would like to see the centre championship i;:n on the two-life sys-. tem, and suggested that the executive consider tho proposition. The following contrihuted items during .the evening: — National Service orchestra, songs' and story, Mr G. Madigan ; Messrs Harris and Yerry, aceordions ; Mr F. Dean,# recitation ; Mr Drummond, violin; Mr Larsen, ecitation ; Mr S. Dockary, song,; Alr Tom Williama, song; Mr H. File, song ; Mr A. IMeir, accordion; Messrs Grey and McPherson, cornet duet; Dlr H. Burfield, song. Mr Pacey and Mr W. 1 ord were the accompanists. Supper was provided and the smging of the National Anthem brought to a close a very happy and successful gathering. j
