GOLD ROD'S STLEGER Sarchene Annexes The Doncaster AJAX THE PRODUCE

SYDNEY, March 27. The autumn meeting of the Australian Jockey Club opened at Eandwick on Saturday iu ideal weather. The course was in splendid Order and the attendance was 52,000. A notable feature of the meeting was the absence of the nsual large important contingent of New Zealand horses, and in point of quality .and numbers the present representatives from the Dominion are the poorest for many years. Formerly it was the rule rather than the exception for New Zealanders to figure prominently in important events at Eandwick - spring gnd autumn meetings. Spearbine opened proce.edings with an easy win in the hurdles, equalling the course record. The veteran, Lough Neagh,, fought stubbornly but was compelled to etrike his eoloufs to Allunga in the final strides of the Autumn Plate, which was won by half a neck. The Melbourne colt, Ajax, made the opposition -appear cheap in the Sires' Produce Stakes by dasking to the front at barrier rise and not af terwards being : troubled. He passed the judge with a five lengths' advantage, equalling the Australasian record, Not to be outdone, Sarcherie also equalled the mile Australasian record, held by Peter Pan, in the Doncaster. The winner finished th© race with a dash from -fifth position at .the home turn. Pamelus threatened danger at the distance but ran out undej pressure and finished fourth. It is worthy of note tliat Sarcherie has now been second in successive Melbourne Cups and he twice defeated Peter Pan in weight-for-age last autumn. Gold Eod dispelled the doubts Nbout his ability to stay by winning the St. Leger with ease. The colt ran kindly under restraint and he occupied fourth position until entering the straight. When McCarten asked for the effort the colt bounded forward and qpickly settled tbe issne, Eesults: — FIEST HUEDLE Of £500; about 2 miles. SPEARBINE, Mr E.
