Swimming Championships at Auckland TEPID-BATH EVENTS

AUCKLAND, Last Night. One Australian and New Zealand record and two New Zealand records were established by the champion competitors in the inter-provincial swimming carnival at the tepid baths to-night. In a great 220 yards race Miss Islay Purdie (Otago) defeated Miss N. Lud-. low (Auckland) in 2 minutes 40 seconds, breaking the record of Miss M. Farquhar (Auckland) by six seconds. Miss Ludlow registered 2 minutes 41' seconds in a special attack on her own New Zealand time in the 200 metresi backstroke. P. E. Mathieson, who on Saturday bettered the Australian and New Zea/ land record for 400 metres by 6 3-5 1 seconds, taking 5 minutes 35 seconds,! succeeded in registering 2 minutes 37! seconds which is an improvement of 6 4-5 seconds on the record. He also eclipsed the Australian time of "i minutes 43 seconds. P. Hanan (Auckland), winner of 110" yards free style scratch race, took 60 4-5 seconds or 1-5 second faster than R. B1. Frankham's record for 100 metres. Frankham was second, beaten by a foot. Miss Purdie won the 50 yards ladies' race in 29 4-5 seconds and Mathieson the 150 yards backstroke in 1 minute 44 9-5 seconds. The result of the 440 yards men's freestyle was: R. Simons (Manawatu) :1, P. Hanan (Auckland) 2, F. Pennington (Wellington) 3. Time, 5 minutes, ;25 4-5 seconds.
