COATS DISCARED AS RACEGOERS SWELTER IN UNEXPECTED HEAT

Following a wet, dull morning, the weather for the Easter Monday race meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club develope'd into an almost unbearably hot day. Those lucky racegoers who had doned light frocks under their top-coats, which they were able to discard as the day got hotter and hotter, were more fortunae than those who had gone dressed for a dull day. Altogether the frocking was Very sombre, suits being the favoured style. Some of the hats with their gay feather mounts were chaTming and suited their wearers to perfection. The shady trees lining the entrance drive made an ideal spot for the many gay luncheon and afternoon tea parties held under their shade. The large attendance included a number of strangers who all enjoyed an excellent day's sport. Among those seen on the lawn were: Mrs P. F. Wall, wife of the president, wearing a .burgundy-red suit with a cream jumper and a smart light navy velour hat turned up ut one side and banded in red. Mrs J. O 'Eeilly, model costume in blue tweed, worn with a white frilled blouQe and smart blue hat. Mrs D. Holden, tailored light brown check costume, worn with a brown blouse and smart little hat in brown, having an eye veil. Mrs H. Peacock, saxe blue jumper worn with a light navy costume, blue felt hat and stone-marten fur. Mrs A. Syme, navy tailored suit, light blue blouse and navy hat. Mi(3 W. B. Clarkson (Australia), light navy ensemble and smart navy hat. Mrs Bob Stead, smart light brown plaid suit worn with a -dark brown velour hat, having a gay feathor mount. Mrs W. P. Fleming, navy blue coat frock and navy velour. hat. Mrs Percy Hunter, navy and white hair-striped tailored suit, worn with a high neeked oyster white satin blouse' and smart navy felt hat. Mrs W. Stead, beige and brown striped coat frock having a wide brown suede belt and brown velour hat. Lady Hunter (Wellington), light brown check belted isuit and close-fit-ting brown hat. Mrs C. Giblin, black cloth belted suit, worn with a Tose pink jumper and a high crowned black felt hat. Mrs H. Parsons, costume in brown knobbed tweed, worn Vrith a smiart hat in brown velour. Mrs .V. Bradley, blue and white flecked tweed suit, worn with a saxa blue blouse and blue velour hat. Mrs C. Williams, lightbrown tweed tailored Suit worn with a brown velour Hamburg hat braided in brown patent leather. Mrs M. Tiffen, saxe blue woollen suit, matching hat. Mrs W. B. Fisher, cedar-brown tweed suit and small matching felt hat. Mr W. Kibblewhite, fawn and red tweed belted suit and fawn velour hat. Mrs Gallagher, costume in navy tweed, worn with a navy hat. Mrs C. Schroder, lang navy cat over a red and blue floral crepe-de- chine frock and navy blue hat. Mrs A. L. McCormick, light fawn tweed costume, worn with a cream satin .bloutee and fawn felt hat. Mrs Gerald Wilson, fawn and brown spotted flannel suit, worn with a brown blouse and a smart brown velour hat. Mrs Sam Peacock, new rust wool crepe frock and matching hat, with a jaunty feather mount. Mrs Lovelock (Pahiatua), emart brown pleated tweed suit and a small velour hat. Mrs A. Kibblewhite, coronation blue frock having a blue and white plaid collar, and a matching felt hat. MrS J. C. Windle, light and dark brown plaid coat, brown and tangerine spotted scarf and a brown felt Tyrolehn hat having a tangerine feather mount. Mrs Stone (Christchurch), rust red tweed suit, worn with a matching hat and stone marten fur. Mrs Bill Harris, smart brown pleated suit, with a becoming st.roller hat in brown- velour. Mrs L. Monckton, amythest tailored tweed isuit, worn with a navy hat and a lapel posy of carnations. Mrs Inglis, costume in blaek cloth, worn with a black felt hat and black fox fur. Mrs L. Hanson, tailored costume in raisin brown tweed, worn with a cream blouse and matching felt hat, Mrs Noel Lawrence ' (Invercargill) navy and white flowered crepe-de-chine frock worn under a navy velqur coat and small navy hat.
