f The Barb.")
Brilliant Pakanui

All the fast work by Waipukurau candidates was again done this morning on the plough track at the Hastings racecourse, when one or two fair gallops were registered. The best sprint recorded here for some time was that done by Pakanui, who got to the end of six furlongs in a shade better than 1.15. He is engaged at the forthcoming Manawatu meeting. Tullamore (B. Stowe), when galloping half a mile in 51secs., registered her be«vt private gallop to date by a second. She was assisted home the last quarter by the steeplechaser Cotsfield.
Soho (P. Atkins) alone registered 1.41$ for once round. This is as good as any time recently for the distanee. He looks the part of a very fit horse. • • • Padishah (B. Stowe), after going a round and a-half at pace work., came home over the last three furlongs in 39$. • f • Felieitation (B. Stowe) and Winitangi (K. Brueur) were associated in a half-mile gallop with the former holding a very slight advantage at the finish in 50$. Parry (K. Brueur) ran his threequarters of a mile in 1.17. He was picked up over the last five furlongs by Iddo (B. Stowe). Both went well to finish strongly. , The last five furlongs ocoupied 64sees. * * Quake (H. Murray) showed some of his spring dash when getting to the end of half a mile in 50sece. The Mimetic gelding finish much better at the end of his task than what he has been doing. • • • King's Hope (Cullen) was not galnped, although he came home over the last two furlongs smartly at the end of his pace" work. * • • Pakanui (Briggs) was responsible for a brilliant effort when breaking 1.15 Tor six furlongs. The first three he skipped over in 35secs. • • • Mahaanui (J. Campbell) was restrieted to a working gallop over five furlongs to run 65secs. The rider, Campbell, is an ap^rentice of S. J. Reid's, who shows promise and is open for riding engagements at Waipukurau. ** m «* Tareha (H. Murray),' Marching Song 1K. Brueur) and Lady Wessex (B. Stowe) finished as named at length intervals over a round in 1.42. Tareha was always in front and was doing his rask the easiest of the trio at the finish. * * * Grey Molly (B. Stowe) and Passion Flower (C. Pilier) ran six in 1.18 with she latter, wide out, doing it very comfortably. This mare gives every indication of being back to her best. » • • Two recent arrivals from Gisborne in Fossicker and Gasman, with H. Murray in the saddle, galloped late in the morning, both going on the course proper, where the trestles were well in under the correct distanees. The going was fast. Fossicker ran his four furlongs in 48 and Gasman five in 61$ — two ■mart performances.
